AMBIENT THOUGHT – EPISODE One Hundred Ninety Five: The Little Things Part II

The following and all of the other episodes to come are snapshots of what goes on in my head, now and in the past. There are times none of this will make sense. There will be times when I might get lucky and the blog I post will be well constructed and will flow like a mountain stream to an awaiting lake below. Other times it will seem like the ramblings of a madman and you’ll ask yourself, “What the……?”
You should probably get used to the latter.

EPISODE ONE HUNDRED NINETY FIVE: THE LITTLE THINGS PART II

Back in Episode 58 on February 24th, 2017, I talked about ‘the little things’.
I have talked about ‘the little things’ various times over the years. I mean, that’s what makes life worth living, right? I think so.

And since life has been strained and tough recently (COVID-19, losing your job, politics, racial inequalities, sexism, etc, etc, etc…), I want us all to take a short break to think of the little things that make us smile (at least, the ones that make me smile) and, maybe, feel a bit hopeful. All those other things will still be there at the end.
Unfortunately…

So, here’s some of the happy small things. If you agree, then YAY! If you don’t, well, skip to the next one. I hope of these is something you’ll agree with and look for it in your own life.

Here we go:

The cool breeze that comes out of nowhere when you’ve been working in the yard and you’re hot and sweaty.
The feeling of accomplishment after you finish cutting the grass.
The smell of your mom’s cooking when you haven’t been there to see her in a long time. (I miss this)
When you gain the complete trust of an animal.
Making something with your hands and it comes out correct.
Hearing from an old friend for no other reason than they missed you. (I think this needs to happen more to all of us)
Finding something you thought was lost forever.
Being inspired by something out of the blue.
The purr of a cat.
The nuzzle of a puppy.
Watching the wind in the trees.
The first taste of coffee in the morning.
Standing up for yourself and your beliefs in the face of opposition.
Taking a walk.
Taking a deep breath.
Taking a warm shower (or hot) on a cold day.
Seeing your surroundings from your roof or in a tree.
Being left alone when you really need it.
Getting a hug for know reason. (and when you really need it)
Finally feeling your favorite season in the air. (mine is Fall)
Having a game night with friends and/or family.
Having your kids suddenly liking or loving something that you do.
Going to the dentist and getting no cavities.
Going to the doctor and finding out the thing that was wrong isn’t that big a deal (a small thing).
Remembering something your dad said or did that made you laugh.
Hearing a song for the first time and falling in love with it.
Not being too critical.
Having a really great dream. (and it makes sense)
A friend or family member that seeks out your advice.
Being a person that people feel comfortable with.
Thinking the A/C is busted and then hearing it come on blowing out cool air. (that happened to me not too long ago around midnight)
Living somewhere that reminds you of your childhood home (if it was a good place, that is)
Finding people that don’t care you’re weird and like being creative, action figures, typewriters, movies, books, etc.
Having a spouse that doesn’t care you’re weird and like being creative, action figures, typewriters, movies, books, etc.
Being weird. (compared to most people)
Become friends with someone famous. (or more well-known than you)
Having a dog or cat pick you out when you go to adopt one.
Eating al fresco at a restaurant on a perfect evening. (pre-COVID)
Eating at home al fresco on the perfect evening. (as of this writing, it’s been too damn hot… but it’ll happen)
The smell and feel of a campfire when it’s cold outside.
The smell of school supplies. (not then, when I needed them)
Fixing a problem before it becomes a problem.
Waving at neighbors but keeping our distance. (Pre-COVID, COVID, POST COVID)
Taking a nap listening to quiet music and waking up refreshed an hour (or two) later.
Taking a nap with a kitten.
Waking up to a kitten nuzzling your nose. (can you tell I just got a kitten that does this?)
Knowing how to juggle.
When a butterfly lands on you can stays awhile.
A fan blowing on you while you sleep.
A weighted blanket. (for those that suffer from anxiety, I highly recommend one)
Remembering your childhood…

And I hope your childhood was a good one. Or, at least, had good moments you can pull from.
And there are more, maybe thousands of little moments that I have loved. And I bet you could think of your own thousand little moments that are different from mine. The point is you recognize these moments and understand how important they are. These moments are the building blocks for a better life. When life is turned upside down and tossing you around in a stormy sea and you feel like you have no lifeline, these ‘little things’ can be thrown white and red ring. You just need to grab on.

I have never asked you to do this but I think this will be helpful.
Go and write down some of your ‘little things’. Make of list of the simply loves in your life and read them back. Maybe read them to someone that you care about. Get a conversation going. Compare. You’ll realize those little things are a lot bigger than you thought.

Because the little things, the good little things, were never little…

I’ve decided to keep a blog about how I’m dealing with depression. I’m going to consider this a form of therapy. It might not help anybody else but it might help me.
