AMBIENT THOUGHT – EPISODE Ninety Nine: There Will ALWAYS Be An Exception

The following and all of the other episodes to come are snapshots of what goes on in my head, now and in the past. There are times none of this will make sense. There will be times when I might get lucky and the blog I post will be well constructed and will flow like a mountain stream to an awaiting lake below. Other times it will seem like the ramblings of a madman and you’ll ask yourself, “What the……?”
You should probably get used to the latter.

EPISODE NINETY NINE:  There Will ALWAYS Be An Exception

We do not live in a perfect world.
Not everything is black or white. There is a LOT of grey.
Whenever we get used to something, eventually it will change. Like it or not. We must bend to the wind.

And there are exceptions to every rule.

Without going into too many details, this is something I have been thinking about for a long time. Let me give you an example.

Let’s say you’re watching a movie on TV and it’s a western. Like my dad, I like westerns, too. You can set your watch and warrant on knowing who the good guys are and who the bad guys are. Odds are, the good wear white hats and the bad is in black. It’s been that way since the beginning.

Well, that’s the way it was

Now, it doesn’t matter what color hat they are wearing. You can’t judge if they are good or bad by just how they look. You have to judge them by their thoughts and actions.

I think that’s true with most things. Priests can be evil. Criminals (for some crimes) may learn from their mistakes and become the most trustworthy person you know. Parents may beat and harm their own children. Strangers might save your life by risking their own, sometimes losing it in the process.

The good may go bad and the bad may go good.

There are those that play the wolf in sheep’s clothing. Most people see that costume and hear flowery words, the fake niceness, and see a smile that is as false as their compliments. But inside, they are jealous, plotting villains of the worst kind. They see an opportunity and exploit it to their own selfish needs.
And everything must always benefit them, no matter what.

Then they might get discovered and cry foul. They cry that it isn’t true and try and turn it around on the people accusing them. And all the while, they pull that sheep costume a little tighter.

Some are good at it. Damn good. They have had years of training. They have had many years of relying on others because they are too lazy to make it on their own. They always try to take the easy way, the less intelligent way. That saying about catching a fish for someone and they can eat for a day, teach that person to fish and they can eat for a lifetime, it’s not something they took to heart. To them, it’s just words that they don’t think applies to them. They prefer to find some sucker to fish for them. And tell others how well they fish. And how they should fish.

I know some people like this. And I bet you do, too.
And you know that these people take much more than they give. The only things they give is worry, heartache, and strife. We hope to weed out these people from our lives.

We might be lucky that these people are just a once in a while hindrance. Unfortunately, sometimes these people come into our lives and stay awhile. Where others can’t see past the cottony outside, we are keen enough to see the sly eyes and the claws that hide underneath. And even more unfortunate is that not only do we see these things but it’s hard to make others see what you see.
You must bide your time. Certain situations may be too sensitive to pull the costume off yet.
Their time will come when they will be seen as the predator they are.

I may be giving some of these people too much credit. Maybe instead of being evil plotters, maybe it’s closer to lucky, stupid idiots. This might be very well true.

Still…bad things must cease. And it’s for the ever vigilant to do so. And prevail.

This is a lesson that we must teach our children. We won’t be able to fish for them every day for their entire lives. They must learn to fish on their own, from their own docks or boats. We must teach them to see the zippers on the costumes and the snarling mouth full of teeth underneath. We must teach them to listen to the words and if they are honest or deceitful. It’s a hard lesson to learn and it may break your heart to show them the world isn’t just black hats and white hats.
In the long run, it might give them a few more peaceful moments that otherwise may have been taken up with dealing with these evil doers. I believe a few hard lessons are better than that.

And it’s important to not be one of these people ourselves. It’s important to be honest with everybody all of the time. True, some facts need to be given with a bit more sugar than just the bitter truth, but the truth must be handed out.

Yes. There are exceptions to every rule. And just because you see somebody acting nice doesn’t mean that they are nice. And just because you see somebody making a mistake doesn’t mean that they are bad or evil.

If they keep making mistakes and know they are mistakes, well, there’s the exception. And if they are doing it all by wearing the false face of kindness and sweetness, their sheep’s clothes zipped up tight and their sharp teeth and gleaming eyes well hidden, beware.
Look hard, be careful, and tread lightly.

They may be closer than you think.

I’ve decided to keep a blog about how I’m dealing with depression. I’m going to consider this a form of therapy. It might not help anybody else but it might help me.
